Just now I positioned someone for a backstab, the animation started, and just as I was about to stab, I was suddenly petrified, and my opponent did the backstab animation from in front of me and I fell to the ground but took no damage. Try paying attention to his backstabs to see how he moves around people and angles his character, and then try to emulate it. Also to riposte you have to parry first, this is done with the L2 button and a shield (you swing the shield a bit).
