BMW's VANOS stands for Variable Nockenwellen Steuerung. The VANOS is incorporated in the BMW M50 engines, where they focus on controlling the cam gear, which

The BMW Service Tech had seen firing and VANOS errors and was just hoping that if he changed enough items it would fix the problem. It didn't. When I got back and diagnosed it as a torn o/s membrane requiring a new valve cover (integrated o/s) and valvetronic sensor (PM item when cover is removed/replaced on N52) her bill for this needless work
These vanos units utilize engine oil and pistons/cylinders to manipulate the positioning of gears to facilitate variable valve timing. The seals on the pistons are leaking due to deteriorating seal O-rings. This leakage is causing the vanos to fail in its function.
Here are the codes I was getting before having it worked on, per a BMW scan tool: #1: 68 Control VANOS, end-pos. fault, exhaust camshaft (OBDII: p1520) #2: 6A Control VANOS, position, exhaust camshaft. #3: EE Misfire, cylinder 1. #4: F2 Misfire, cylinder 5. #5: F0 Misfire cylinder 3. #6: F3 Misfire, cylinder 6.

When rebuilding after replacing the timing chain do the 2 vanos gears on the end of the camshafts have to be positioned on the camshafts in a certain position as there are no keyways for them. Also is there any identication to tell if they are ok or failed.

The M50 was used solely in the E34 520i and 525i, and the E36 320i and 325i. It is a straight six, or inline-6, coming in at either 2.0L (M50B20) or 2.5L (M50B25). In September of 1992, the engine received a technical updated (dubbed TU on the engine code) which added a single Vanos system. Table of Contents show.

The 90's 540i engine issue had to do with the Nikasil cylinder liners not playing nice with the high sulphur levels in US gas.
VANOS allows for two things. Ability to meet emissions and ability to run cams for peak power but maintain smooth idle. On stock setup, you won't encounter valve interference nor piston to valve clearance issues. But tuning it incorrectly could reduce power or torque depending on what you do.
Spread the love. VANOS is an abbreviation for a German-named engine component which was designed to enhance the efficiency of BMW intake performance. This bit of technology is responsible for streamlining engine timing by opening intake valves more efficiently, altering camshaft and drive gear position. Table of Contents show.
